TAYLOR DIANE ELIZABETH Anyone who came into the presence of Diane Elizabeth Taylor never forgot her laugh. She gave smiles and laughter to friends and strangers alike. Her laughter was an expression of her happiness and joy to be alive. She loved her family and friends deeply. Diane, Aunt Dee Dee, or Dee were her AKAs. Diane was the second child born to Robert and Elizabeth Taylor on January 5, 1944. Her sister, Barbara, was there to welcome the healthy baby girl. Though Diane never had children, her sister gave her three nephews whom she adored. Michael, Steven, and Christopher were her avenues to express love as a doting aunt. They, in turn, gave her seven great-nieces and nephews whom she cherished. Her sister was her best friend throughout her life and she was cared for by Barbara during her last weeks of life. In Williamsburg, the Burke family was her rock for many years and loved her as their own. She was a devoted friend and family member to those she loved including her best friend, Joyce. Diane loved everything about her upbringing. She loved her birth place Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Steelers, the streets and neighborhoods where she played as a child and went to school, and her family history. She loved animals, children, her friends, freedom, and her garden. Although she went to school at Florida State University and became a teacher of young children, she never lost her affection for Pittsburgh. Her 40 years as an educator gave her the opportunity to travel the world. She taught in FL, GA, CO, and spent 20 odd years in Asia and Europe teaching children of military service members as a Department of Defense Dependent Schools educator. Finally she taught in Newport News Public Schools and retired in 2008. She lived in James City County for over 20 years and made many friends here. Those who loved her will miss her deeply. She died on June 14, 2016, after a two-year battle with small cell lung cancer. A private memorial service will be held in her home in July. In lieu of flowers, Diane asked that donations be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.nelsencares.com. BACKUS DAVID 1953-2016. It is with profound sadness that the Economics Faculty at New York University and the Stern School of Business mark the passing of our beloved colleague, David Backus. Dave, the Heinz Riehl Professor of Economics at New York University's Stern School of Business died on June 12, 2016. The cause of death was leukemia. Dave was a renowned economist. He pioneered a new approach to international macroeconomics, infusing it with tools from finance. His approach shapes our understanding of credibility and monetary policy, exchange rate behavior and international finance. His work on asset markets, with a wide variety of authors, helped lay the foundation for the thriving new research area at the intersection of macroeconomics and finance. In addition to being an intellectual leader at the Stern School, Dave served for seven years as the Vice Dean for Faculty and as Chair of the Economics Department and the Accounting Department. Dave was much loved by his colleagues and by generations of Stern students for his strength of character, his generosity and kindness, and his sharp wit. Dave was a gifted teacher. Driven by his own deep intellectual curiosity, he developed and spearheaded many visionary courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. Dave was the consummate modern academic. He loved research, teaching, and students. He was also a skilled leader who valued and strengthened the culture of academic institutions. Dave was never happier than when he could bring people together socially to share a beer and talk about research and ideas. Dave, you will be deeply missed, you left us too soon. Friday afternoons will never be the same. Prior to joining Stern in 1990, Dave studied at Hamilton College (BA, 1975) and Yale University (PhD, 1981), taught at Queen's University and the University of British Columbia, served at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and was a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He grew up in Pittsburgh and remained an avid supporter of the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins. Dave is survived by his wife, Marilyn Jason; his children, Paul and Melanie Backus; his mother, Marjorie Backus; and his sisters and brother, Lois Backus, Laura Hoffman, Ruth Grillo, and Rudolf Ramsauer.
